We are pleased to share the promotion of I. Michael Leitman, MD, FACS, to Dean for Graduate Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS).

Since his 2013 appointment as Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Leitman has done an outstanding job overseeing the largest Graduate Medical Education (GME) training program in the United States. The program encompasses more than 2,300 trainees in 148 American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved residency and fellowship programs at 12 different hospital sites.  He has assembled a team that includes three Associate Deans and more than 240 Program Directors, who work to integrate and rationalize programs throughout the Mount Sinai Health System.  With an emphasis on superb clinical care, quality, individualized support, and strong mentoring, under Dr. Leitman’s purview the programs are attracting excellent trainees and achieving high marks from the ACGME.  In this new role, Dr. Leitman will continue his efforts to create the very best GME programs in the country.

For nearly three decades, Dr. Leitman has been a busy surgeon and committed medical educator.  Dr. Leitman also serves as Vice Chair of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Professor of Surgery and Medical Education at ISMMS.  In all roles, Dr. Leitman is known and admired for his breadth of knowledge, calm and thoughtful nature, and strong interpersonal skills.

Dr. Leitman earned his MD at Boston University. He pursued an internship and residency at the Cornell University campus of New York-Presbyterian, rising to Chief Resident Surgeon.  Following completion of a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at North Shore University Hospital, Dr. Leitman joined the Weill Cornell College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Surgery.  In 2005, he was appointed Vice Chair of Surgery and Residency Program Director at Beth Israel Medical Center, with an Associate Professorship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and was quickly promoted to Professor.  Dr. Leitman transferred to the ISMMS faculty in 2014, and remains on the attending staff at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.
