Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why would I want to use Gmail for Alumni? I already have a Gmail account.

Your Gmail for Alumni account is a way to stay connected with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and your fellow graduates.  Since this account is “.edu” based, you will also be eligible for discounts on subscriptions like The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft, and more.


Does this Gmail for Alumni account erase or replace my current Gmail account?

When activated, this account does not erase or replace your current Gmail account. U
nlike your personal Gmail account, these new accounts will not be subject to advertising and Google provides other privacy safeguards within an academic environment. So feel free to keep your current personal Gmail account if you wish, but activate your Gmail for Alumni account to take advantage of all of the benefits, privacy and connectivity that come with a “.edu” account.

Who will provide technical support for my Gmail for Alumni account?

The email service is being run by Google. Please reach out to Google directly for technical support and troubleshooting tips on your new Gmail account by clicking here.

Is there a forwarding service connecting my ISMMS student account to my new alumni account?


No. By necessity, the alumni email accounts are being kept totally separate from students’ existing Icahn email accounts, which are allowed to maintain PHI and other sensitive data.


For recent grads, student accounts remain active for a short time after graduation. Recent grads are encouraged to manually transfer their [non-sensitive] messages to their new alumni accounts, as well as re-creating their label structure.

Are other Google services available along with Gmail?


 Yes, there are other Google services that are available with your account, Google

Drive for document sharing, Google Calendar, Google+, and more. Activate your
account and explore all that Google has to offer!


Alumni email powered by Gmail – Set up instructions

Access via web browser - on a laptop or desktop computer

1. Go to

    You may want to bookmark this page for easier access in the future.


2. Enter your Alumni Account username ( and default             password provided by the Alumni Association - MountSinai2017.

    You will be required to change your password upon the first login.


3. Create a strong password using numbers, symbols and mix of upper and lower case letters.    

    Don't use personal information or common words as a password.

     If a username is already filled in and you need to sign in to a different account, click
       Sign in with a different account.

     If you see a page describing Gmail instead of the sign-in page, click Sign in in the top              right corner of the page.

iPhone & iPad

To sign in, add your Alumni account powered by Gmail (

When you add an Alumni account to the built-in Mail app, you can check this account in addition to any other accounts you already have set up.

1.       Open the Settings app

2.       Tap “Mail”

3.       Tap “Accounts”

4.       Tap “Add accounts”

5.       Tap “Google”

6.       Enter your full Alumni account address (

7.       Tap “Next”

8.       Enter your Alumni account password.

  •     If this is your first time signing in, enter the temporary password provided by the Alumni             Association. You will be prompted to set a new password after you click “Next.”

9.       Tap “Next”

10.     Tap “Save”

After your account is added, you can see your Alumni account e-mail in the Mail app by tapping the “Mailboxes” button in the upper left corner and selecting this new account, which may be titled “Gmail” or be written as your Alumni e-mail address. Alternatively, you can use the ‘All Inboxes’ view, which shows new e-mail from any accounts you have set up on your iPhone/iPad in one list.



To sign in, add your Alumni account powered by Gmail (

When you add an account to the Gmail app, you can sign in to the app using that account. You can also add multiple accounts to the app and switch among them.


If you aren't on the latest version of the Gmail app, update the Gmail app.

1.       Open the Gmail app.

2.       In the top left, tap "Menu".

3.       To the right of your username, tap the Down arrow.

4.       Tap Add account: (

5.       Follow the steps on the screen to add your account.

6.       After your account is added, you'll be signed in to Alumni email any time you open the
          Gmail app.

We strongly recommend that you set up a recovery email address or phone number in case you forget your password. Losing access to your emails, documents, and photos can be frustrating. To make sure you can get back into your account quickly, easily, and securely in the future, add password recovery options. You don't have to provide a recovery email address or phone number, but having one makes it easier for you to regain access to your account if you forget your password or are locked out.

If you've lost access to your account, you can try to regain access through our account recovery form.

Add or change a recovery email


     Sign in to My Account: (

     In the "Personal info & privacy" section, select Your personal info.

     Choose Email.

     From here you can:

       - Add a recovery email: Next to "Recovery email," select Add recovery email.

       - Change your recovery email: Next to "Recovery email," select your email address.

       - Enter your recovery email address.

     Select Done.

Add or change a recovery phone number

     Sign in to My Account.

     In the "Personal info & privacy" section, select "Your personal info."

     Choose "Phone".

     From here you can:

       - Add a recovery phone: Under "Recovery phone," select Add recovery phone.

       - Change your recovery phone: Next to your phone number, select Edit. In the box that                  appears, choose Update Number.

       - Enter your phone number and follow the onscreen instructions.

Change or reset your password

You can change your password for security reasons or reset it if you forget it. Your Alumni account password can be used to access many Google products, like Gmail and YouTube.

Change your password:

1.       Sign in to My Account.

2.       Under "Sign-in & security," select Signing in to Google.

3.       Choose Password. If you see a prompt to sign in again, sign in.

4.       Enter your new password, then select Change Password.

Reset your password

Go to the Account Support page.

Follow the instructions. You'll be asked some questions to confirm it's your account and an email will be sent to you. If you don’t get an email:

     Check your Spam or Bulk Mail folders

     Request another email.

     Choose a password that you haven't already used with this account.
