We are pleased to share that Ramon Parsons, MD, PhD, will become Director of The Tisch Cancer Institute (TCI) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) effective July 1. Steven Burakoff, MD, who has been Director of the Institute for a decade, will move into a new role as Dean for Cancer Innovation.  We are most grateful to Dr. Burakoff for his outstanding leadership as TCI Director, and look towards the Institute’s continued success under Dr. Parsons.

Dr. Parsons, the Ward-Coleman Chair in Cancer Research and Professor of Oncological Sciences, is a world-renowned cancer biologist who brings an interdisciplinary approach to cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.  As TCI Director, he will oversee scientific development and encourage collaborations among cancer investigators.  Important priorities for Dr. Parsons will be maintaining the Institute’s National Cancer Institute designation and working towards designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

A familiar figure at The Tisch Cancer Institute, Dr. Parsons was appointed its Deputy Director in 2016. Since, he has been Co-Leader of the Cancer Mechanisms Program, which studies cancer signaling, transcription regulation, and biology. Dr. Parsons is also an Icahn Scholar, an honor conferred upon select ISMMS faculty who are among the foremost experts in their field and whose work is transforming the face of biomedical science. Upon assuming the TCI Directorship, Dr. Parsons will retain his role as Chair of the Department of Oncological Sciences.  He will also continue his own research program on the identification of genetic and biochemical changes that lead normal cells to develop into cancerous ones. Among his most important discoveries is the identification of PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene that is often mutated in cancer, which provides critical therapeutic targets in breast, brain, prostate, and endometrial cancers.

Prior to joining the ISMMS faculty in 2013, Dr. Parsons served on the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons faculty for 18 years.  At the time of his departure, he was the Avon Foundation Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology and Medicine and the Breast Cancer Program Leader in The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

For his exemplary scientific contributions, Dr. Parsons has received many external awards and honors, including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Outstanding Investigator Award for Breast Cancer Research and the National Institutes of Health Research Service Award.   He was a Susan G. Komen Scholar and recently completed a six-year term as Chair of the Special Conferences Committee at the AACR.
