We are pleased to share the appointment of Joseph I. Friedman, MD, as Director of Delirium Services for the Mount Sinai Health System.

As Director of Delirium Services, Dr. Friedman will oversee operations of the Hospital Delirium Program and work to expand the program throughout the Health System. Currently in operation at The Mount Sinai Hospital, the Program provides assistance to medical and surgical care teams in the early identification and treatment of patients exhibiting delirium, a disturbance in mental abilities that results in a state of reduced awareness and confused thinking.

In this role, Dr. Friedman will ensure the continued development of innovations and system improvement throughout the Program, provide administrative and clinical leadership, and manage the quality of screening for and care of hospitalized patients with delirium throughout the Health System. In addition to his duties as Director, Dr. Friedman will continue to serve as Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Associate Professor of Psychiatry with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Friedman has been a valued member of the Mount Sinai community for more than 20 years. Beginning in 1992 with a residency in the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Friedman has taken a robust role in both research and academics. Most recently, he collaborated with Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart and Jagat Narula, MD, PhD, Director of Cardiovascular Imaging, to study the structure and function of the brain in relation to vascular risk factors. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles, several book chapters, and reviewed numerous peer-reviewed medical journals, including Journal of Clinical Psychiatry and Schizophrenia Research.

Dr. Friedman received his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed a Schizophrenia Research fellowship and Psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai. He is an associate member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and member of the Society of Biological Psychiatry and American Psychiatric Association.
